Prince George County was formed in 1703 from part of Charles City County, Virginia. The City of Hopewell lies within Prince George County, and the county adjoins the independent cities of Petersburg and Colonial Heights. Having an estimated population of 36,435 as of July 1, 2014, most of the county is rural, with much of the land devoted to agriculture and timber production. Prince George is also home to the U.S. Army post, Fort Lee.
